Working on the Left Side of the Security Equation

21:36 27 September in Personal Safety

For most of us in the United States, we live a relatively secure existence going about our daily business without thinking of our personal security. We spend our day safe at work, our homes are left safely vacant while we are away and our children are safe in school. Consequently, we tend to deal with issues at hand giving little or no thought to our security. In many parts of the world such as the Middle East, Africa and some parts of Mexico people are living in high-risk environments where attacks, terror bombings, and kidnappings are commonplace and permeate every aspect of life: work, home, and family and as a result, people living in these high-risk environments spend a considerable amount of time in thought and preparation for their personal security. Every aspect of daily activity is measured against the template of security.

Security is a state of being

Those of us living in safe environments tend to think of security in terms of it being a commodity or a thing – security is something you buy when you need it: a guard, an alarm or a video surveillance system. To those individuals living in risky environments, they know very well that security cannot be purchased; it is a state of being. To achieve a state of security you must think about it, plan for it and work at it.  Security is achieved through commitment.

When you consider security in terms of risk you can easily determine that the less risk you face the less harm you are likely to suffer. The insurance industry is based on this very concept. Viewing security as a relationship to risk, you can easily understand that the greater the risk the greater the chance to suffer harm. Consider then the relationship of risk mitigation to lack of harm or a state of security: the greater the risk mitigation effort, the less chance to suffer harm. In other words, greater risk mitigation = greater state of security.

To achieve security in your business you must understand a few key points:

  • You must first understand that security is not a commodity and that it cannot be purchased.
  • You must understand that security is a state of being and it is achieved through commitment.
  • You must understand that a direct relationship exists between risk and harm – the greater the risk the greater the chance for harm.
  • You must understand that a direct relationship exists between risk mitigation and security – the greater the effort to mitigate risk the greater the state of security you create.

Only about 30% of the Fortune 500 invests in corporate security departments and the rate of investment in security in smaller companies is dramatically lower. If you are not investing in mitigation strategies you are not creating a state of security.

We at Rampart Group have created a cost-effective way for our clients to develop effective risk mitigation strategies to create secure working environments without the expense of developing your own internal security department. We call it our Virtual Security Director ProgramTM. Visit us today at https://rampartgroup.com/virtual-security-director-program/ to learn more then call us to get started creating a secure state of being.
